Hansom cabs (the kind you see in Sherlock Holmes movies) are also part of the origin of the word taxicab.  The word cab is an abbreviation of the word cabriolet - which is the design of the hansom in that it is a light horse-drawn vehicle with two wheels and one horse. And the hansom was the first vehicle for hire to have mechanical, clockwork taximeters to help calculate fares.  Taximeter + cabriolet = taxicab.
